Courtois has been sidelined since August 2023, due to rupturing the cruciate ligament in his left knee. The goalkeeper had been announced to return to action in the final weeks of the season.

But now he apparently injured his right knee in training. “Following tests carried out today, our player Thibaut Courtois has been diagnosed with a ruptured internal meniscus in his right knee”, said Madrid in a statement.

The goalkeeper is not expected to play for Madrid for the rest of this season and had already ruled out playing for Belgium in the European Championship in the summer. He should be replaced by Ukrainian Andriy Lunin.
