The announcement was shared in the team’s Instagram account. “AS Roma can confirm that José Mourinho and his coaching staff will leave the club with immediate effect. Further updates on the new First Team coaching staff will follow imminently. Thanks for everything on behalf of everyone at AS Roma, José!”, says the caption.

A statement was also published on the team’s website. Owners Dan and Ryan Friedkin thanked Mourinho “for the passion and commitment he has shown” as boss. “We will always have great memories of his stewardship, but we believe that, in the best interests of the club, immediate change is necessary”, added the statement.
Mourinho took over in May 2021, leading Roma to the Europa League Conference title a year later and the Europa League final in 2023. However, this season they are five points off the bottom qualifying spot in Serie A for the Champions League and last week they were knocked out of the Coppa Italia by rivals Lazio.
