Arantxa Sanchez Vicario left her mark in the history of world tennis with her achievements in the 1980s and 1990s. Reaching the number 1 position in the world rankings in 1995, the former tennis player was three-times champion of the Roland Garros tournament (1989, 1994 and 1998 ) and won the US Open in 1994. In addition, she has four Olympic medals: silver in doubles and bronze in singles in Barcelona (1992), and silver in singles and bronze in doubles in Atlanta (1996).
The international press explains that Vicario and her ex-husband hid their assets in order to avoid paying a loan taken out from the Bank of Luxembourg. The Spanish authorities stated that the former tennis player “had sufficient resources to repay the loan”, but, deliberately, they chose to hide her assets to avoid financial obligations. In the same trial, the Superior Court of Justice of Catalonia convicted three other people of the same crime.
