Last Thursday (14), at an annual WorldTour seminar held in Lausanne – Switzerland, the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) announced new measures that will be in the regulations for next year’s competitions as a way for competitors to have more security in the face of disputes.

This time, the institution decided to prohibit inward-facing brake levers as there is a possibility that this technique could limit the pilots’ ability to perform positively, as well as the use of brakes which could lead to a lack of safety and even accidents.

The changes do not define exactly how the new standard will be applied, however they do state that “…on the topic of safety, an explanation was given of the UCI’s work with the cycling industry to create clear regulations regarding extreme inward leaning.of the brake levers”. Further details have not yet been released by the institution.
Previously, the UCI reported that it will be implementing penalties and fines for competitors who use clothing and accessories that are not provided for in the regulations. The information released states that fines can be applied to those wearing non-compliant clothing, that is, socks that are too high, team kits that have not been registered, aero-modified fabrics, among others. Penalties can be around CHF 2,000, equivalent to US$2,250.00.
In addition to this measure, which will be applied at the beginning of 2024, the UCI also announced that it has increased the institution’s ranking number, meaning it will be a little more difficult for teams to maintain themselves and avoid relegation in the final rankings of the men’s WorldTour competitions in 2025 and ProTeam.
The measures also apply to the food of the competitors. Continuing the rule established last year, athletes will not be able to consume food or water in the last 20 kilometers of a match in the stages that are on the official 2024 calendar.
