Ten Hag said he “felt sorry for the fans”, but argued that he deserves a chance to continue his job despite the increasing pressure on him. “I understand that when the results are not there it’s a logical process there are questions”, said the coach after the 3-0 home defeat against Newcastle United on Wednesday 1st.

The manager says he is confident that he can do the job. “At all my clubs I have done it. But at this moment we are in a bad place. I take responsibility for it. I am a fighter and I am in a fight”.  United lost eight of their first 15 matches in all competitions this season, and also the first time since 1930 that the team has lost five of its first 10 opening home games.

Ten Hag says he takes responsibility for it. “We don’t give the performance and I feel sorry for the fans. It is below our standards and we have to put it right. We have to recover from it. We have to quickly recover. Saturday is the next game but we have to raise our standards, this is not good enough”.

The defeat against Newcastle was followed by the defeat in the Manchester derby on Sunday (29) by the same scoreline. United’s next game is on Saturday (4) against Fulham in the Premier League.
