Sainz and Thomas beat three other teams, which also included drivers and golfers. Tony Finau and Pierre Gasly, Rickie Fowler and Lando Norris, and Max Homa and Alex Albon were the other pairs in competition. To win the competition, Sainz and Thomas beat Tony Finau and Pierre Gasly in the closest-to-the-pin contest on the last hole, after the four-team field had been split down the middle after eight holes of play.
The competition had its own format. On the first tee, four golfers teed off at the same time and then ran to their golf carts, following the “race course” designated for the fairway to reach their balls. The golfers raced to reach the green to see who could get there the fastest, locate their golf balls and then get into the middle of the chaos on the greens.
As part of the race to reach the greens, golfer Rickie Fowler drove the cart with F1 driver Lando Norris as a passenger. The other team consisted of Max Homa-Alex Albon. Finau was responsible for the first birdie of the competition.
Sainz and Thomas lifted the cup together in the post-match ceremony, and even received checkered flag jackets. They put champagne in the trophy, and Thomas drank it from it. Until Sainz dropped and broke the trophy.
The event was a prelude to the Heineken Silver Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix, which will take place next weekend (17-19). It was also the first sporting event to be broadcast live on Netflix.
