Lizzo became the first person in 200 years to play a crystal flute in the Library of Congress collection. The moment happened last Tuesday (27), during the singer’s show at Capital One Arena, in Washington. The instrument originally belonged to the fourth US president, James Madison (1751-1836).

On social media, Lizzo shared videos of the moment she received the flute on stage directly from the hands of the Library’s representative, Carla Hayden. “The Library of Congress let me play the historic 200 year old crystal flute on stage tonight. No one has ever heard what it sounds like…now you do”, wrote the artist in an Instagram post.

During the show, she explained the origin of the play. “This is from the early 1800s. This was a gift to James Madison from a French designer of crystal flutes, to commemorate his second term. There was a fire and the only two things that were saved were a portrait of George Washington and this crystal flute right here. I’m the first person to play it, so you’re about to hear how it sounds for the first time”, Lizzo said.
At the end of the performance, Lizzo celebrated, “I twerked and played James Madison’s 1800 flute! Thank you to the Library of Congress for preserving our history and legal history. The story is really cool, guys!”.
