Carroll had initially requested at least ten million dollars in response to defamatory statements made by Trump in 2019, when he was still President of the United States. On the final morning of the trial, Carroll’s lawyer reiterated the need for Trump to face the financial consequences for defaming his client and denying the sexual assault allegations. The lawyer argued that Trump should pay “dearly” for his conduct, pointing to compensation in the order of tens of millions of dollars.

He also criticized the justice system, claiming it is out of control and being used as a political weapon. In 2023, Trump had already been ordered to pay five million dollars in compensation to the American writer and journalist.
