Republican senators blocked, on Wednesday 6, a White House request for US$106 billion in aid to Ukraine and Israel.

As a result, the blockade occurs because Democrats refuse to include the reforms demanded by Republicans to curb the entry of migrants at the border with Mexico.

Thus, 60 votes in favor were needed for the request to move forward, but, with 49 votes against by the Republicans, the text was blocked.

Therefore, this refusal represents a blow to President Joe Biden, who warned Congress that his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, will not limit himself to victory in Ukraine if he wins the war, but could even attack a Nato country.

After the defeat in the Senate, Biden reacted by stating that “history will judge harshly those who turned their backs on the cause of freedom”.

It is worth remembering that even if it were approved in the Senate, sending more money to Ukraine and Israel would also need to be approved by the Chamber, which has a Republican majority.

For this reason, in the past, several deputies from Biden’s opposition party were against sending money to Kiev. In recent months, the sending of American funds to White House allies abroad has divided congressmen.

Two government measures did not advance in the Legislature, and tempers are rising as the impasse threatens to extend until 2024, when there will be new presidential elections. With the transfer of funds abroad being an unpopular issue among the electorate, more focused on internal issues.
