Mariah Carey got an early Christmas present! The lawsuit that accused the artist of plagiarism for “All I Want For Christmas Is You” was closed. Last Tuesday (1), Vince Vance’s lawyers officially dropped the lawsuit, which sought damages of 20 million dollars.

In June, musician Andy Stone, who introduces himself as Vince Vance, claimed that “All I Want For Christmas Is You”, released in 1994, is a plagiarism of his 1989 song of the same name. The lawsuit targeted the singer herself, songwriter Walter Afanasieff and Sony Music claiming they “never asked permission” to use the song title “All I Want for Christmas Is You”.

According to Billboard, “the move means the case will be dismissed, but leaves the door open for Vance to refile the case in the future”.

“The US Copyright Office records show many other songs with the name ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’, including a number from before Carey’s or Vance’s songs were written”, Billboard reported.
