Actress and producer of the film, Margot Robbie, reinforced that her producer, Lucky Chap, stated that the film “was not meant to be a trilogy” and that she plans to look for a “big, original and bold idea” to create a new phenomenon on the big screen (via Variety).
“It’s funny the knee-jerk reaction these days is for everyone to immediately ask about a sequel,” said Robbie. “I don’t think it was like this 20 years ago.”
As a result, according to her, the exhaustion that the production caused for everyone involved, including the director and screenwriter Greta Gerwig, was very great and she doesn’t know “how to recharge that energy again”.

“[At Lucky Chap] we want to make more films that have the effect that Barbie had. I don’t know if it has to be a Barbie 2”.
“Why can’t it be another big, original, bold idea where we have an incredible filmmaker, a big budget to play with, and the trust of a huge conglomerate behind us to go and really have fun? I want to do this,” concluded Robbie.
Barbie, co-starring the likes of Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Simu Liu, America Ferrera and Will Ferrell, was released in theaters in June and grossed more than $1.4 billion globally. The film was nominated in several categories at the Golden Globes and Critic’s Choice Awards.
