The list of nominees for the Independent Spirit Awards, an award that celebrates independent Hollywood productions, including films and series, was announced today (5). American Fiction, May December and Past Lives were the most nominated films, with 5 each.

The film “Showing Up” directed by Kelly Reichardt was chosen to receive the Robert Altman Award, which is given to a film director, casting director and cast member. Due to the rules of the Spirit Awards, the film cannot be eligible in the acting categories.
Thus, among the snobs, the biggest misses were Paul Giamatti for “The Holdovers”, and Cailee Spaeny for “Priscilla”. Both were remembered in Gotham, and now they were left out of Indie.
In fact, “Priscilla” had no nominations here, nor did the film “Origin”, by acclaimed filmmaker Ava DuVernay.
Founded in 1984, Spirit is an award dedicated to independent filmmakers. The Independent Spirit Awards are presented by Film Independent, a non-profit organization dedicated to independent films and independent filmmakers.

For this reason, films such as Killers of the Flower Moons by Martin Scorsese, Maestro by Bradley Cooper or Oppernheimer by Christopher Nolan cannot be nominated due to the production cost.
However, indie has become an important Oscar thermometer when it comes to independent films in contention.
