Filmmaker James Cameron updated fans about the next films in the Avatar franchise. According to him, the third film will delve deeper into the characters, while the fourth will take us through a six-year time jump.

“We did the [motion] capture and live-action photography for the third film as a cross-production with [Avatar: The Way of Water], and we were even part of film four because our young characters will have a big leap forward in the fourth film.” Cameron told People magazine.

“We see them [around the time of the third film] and then we jump six years into the future, and then we come back,” he added of the timeskip. “And then, the part where we go back [before the six years] is the part we haven’t filmed yet. So we will start with that after the third film comes out.”

While some scenes have already been filmed, Cameron still has to tackle everything else on the film, which is still on track for its December 21, 2029 release date, a long six years from now. Avatar producer Jon Landau previously revealed that the scenes he completed in Avatar 4 are part of the film’s first act, stating that it is already complete.

“We’ve completed most of the first act of Avatar 4 and there were logistical reasons why we needed to do that,” said Landau. Now, it appears that these “logistical reasons” have to do with the time in which the film is set. “We designed most of the film for Avatar 4, but we didn’t actually shoot the whole thing – just the first act.”

It’s worth remembering that the launch of the franchise, Avatar: The Way of Water, resumed the story of Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and his beloved Neytiri (Zoë Saldaña) on the planet of Pandora.

Many years after the events of the first film, the two have formed a family and find themselves in the position of defending the planet from a new human invasion.

The Way of Water grossed US$2.3 billion at the global box office, and is now available on Disney+. The third film is scheduled to premiere in 2025, while the fourth is expected to arrive only in 2029.
