As a result, the musical made an impressive US$18.1 million at the box office, pushing the DC film into second place, with US$10.6 million grossed. With this, The Color Purple had the second best opening for a film released at Christmas, behind only Sherlock Holmes, which made US$24.6 million in 2009.
It’s worth remembering that the weekend between December 21st and 24th, Aquaman 2 topped the American box office, but had a lower-than-expected result, with one of the worst openings for a film from the DCEU, the DC extended universe.
