In recent weeks Kim Kardashian has been accused of damaging Marilyn Monroe’s dress after wearing it at the Met Gala 2022, photos of the worn-out piece have circulated on the web. Last Thursday (16), Ripley’s Believe It or Not!, the New York museum that lent the dress, denied that the socialite had caused damage to the historic piece.

In an official statement, Amanda Joiner, vice president of publishing and licensing at Ripley’s Entertainment, said Kardashian didn’t harm the famous dress walking up the stairs at the Metropolian Museum. “From the bottom of the Met steps, where Kim got into the dress, to the top where it was returned, the dress was in the same condition it started in”.

According to the museum, Kim’s appearance contributed to making Monroe more famous. “Our mission is to both entertain and educate visitors and fans, and sparking conversations like the discourse around Marilyn Monroe’s dress does just that. No matter which side of the debate you are on, the historical importance of the dress has not been negated, but rather highlighted. An entirely new group of young people have now been introduced to the legacy of Marilyn Monroe, the statement read.

The iconic “Happy Birthday” dress for John F. Kennedy was worn by Marilyn Monroe 60 years ago during the then president’s 45th birthday party at Madison Square Garden. Designed by Jean Louis, the piece originally cost $12,000. In 2016, Ripley’s Believe It or Not! won the dress after a bid of $4.8 million in an auction organized by Julien’s Auctions.
