Sainz thought he had a stomach problem, but he was diagnosed with appendicitis and will have to undergo surgery. Ferrari announced that he will be replaced for the rest of the race weekend by the team’s 18-year-old British reserve driver Oliver Bearman.

Bearman was in Jeddah, competing in the Formula 2 championship and had taken pole position for the qualifying race on Thursday. This will mark his F1 debut, although he drove a Haas car in the first practice sessions at the Mexican and Abu Dhabi Grands Prix last year.
