In December 2023, Bellows ruled that Trump could not appear on the ballot based on Section 3 of the 14th Amendment, which prohibits individuals from holding public office if, after swearing to support the Constitution, they engage in insurrection or rebellion against the United States. By making this decision, Maine became the second state, after Colorado, to bar Trump from the polls due to his role in the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021.
