The Blues’ decision was announced on Tuesday (2) in a statement. Rooney himself also shared a statement on his Instagram account. He thanked the team for the opportunity and wrote that he intends to spend time with his family.

Rooney was appointed on October 11, following the dismissal of John Eustace, with the Blues in sixth place in the table. Since then, they’ve fallen to 20th place and Monday’s (1) 3-0 defeat at Leeds was their ninth loss in 15 games.

The former England captain previously had spells with Derby County and MLS side DC United. Since being in charge of the Blues, Rooney won just two matches. He left Millwall in October, and is being pointed as one of the names to become caretaker boss.

Birmingham City is six points off the relegation places, and will face Hull City on Saturday (6), for the third round of the FA Cup. They also will face three crucial league games before the January transfer window closes, Swansea and Middlesbrough at home and Stoke away.
