“Mufasa – The Lion King”, sequel to the live-action “The Lion King” released in 2019, had its premiere date announced by Disney. The prequel will be directed by Barry Jenkins (Moonlight) and will tell the story of young Mufasa before he became Simba’s father. The film will premiere on July 5, 2024.

The plot of the new feature will follow the pair of brothers in childhood, exploring Mufasa’s rise to his reign as king and the reasons that led Scar to become a true villain.

“Mufasa was actually an orphaned lion who had to discover the world on his own. By telling his story, we can show the true journey of how he found his place in the cycle of life. I needed to make this movie because when I was 14 I was raising two nephews and we had this VHS tape that we watched like 95 times in a two day period. I thought about Mufasa and how he became so big. He’s not just a king. He’s big because of the family and friends that accompany him,” Jenkins said during the D23 Expo.

The screenplay will be by Jeff Nathanson, who also wrote the 2019 remake. The film will feature music by Hans Zimmer, Pharrell and Nicholas Britell.
