Originally planning to stay for just a year as an English teacher, she has since extended her contract, captivated by the affordability and lifestyle in one of China’s most populous cities.
Through her TikTok account @laura_explaura, Laura offers a glimpse into her daily life, including a breakdown of her monthly expenses which are significantly lower than what she previously paid in the UK. Her biggest cost is rent, paying just £822 for a spacious three-bedroom apartment with a terrace. Utilities cost her a modest £90 per month.
Socialising and eating out are also far cheaper. Laura spends £137 on nightlife and £101 on groceries and dining out once daily. Transport is another area where she saves, spending only £58 a month, with a 25-minute taxi ride costing just £3. Even personal treats are economical, with a gel manicure priced at just £6, and regular massages covered by her insurance.
Despite the many upsides, Laura admits there are cultural adjustments and challenges. One of the most talked-about aspects in her videos is the public toilet situation. In a viral clip, she shows facilities lacking doors and flush systems, with only holes in the ground and no toilet paper. She describes the experience as “authentic,” noting the complete absence of privacy and even witnessing someone washing underwear in the communal sink area.
