One of the soldiers suffered serious injuries, as stated by National Security Council spokeswoman Adrienne Watson. The attack was claimed responsibility by the Iranian-backed Kataib Hezbollah militia and affiliated groups.

The escalation of tensions in the region has been notable since Hamas’ attack on Israel on October 7. The United States blames Iran, which financed and trained Hamas, for the rise in violence, including attacks by Yemen’s Houthis on ships in the Red Sea.
The Biden administration seeks to prevent the conflict between Israel and Hamas from escalating into a broader regional war. The US response has been criticized by Republicans, while the country maintains thousands of troops in Iraq, training local forces and fighting remnants of the Islamic State, as well as having hundreds of fighters in Syria, the target of several attacks attributed to Iranian-backed groups since the beginning of October.
