Coldplay are suing their former manager, Dave Holmes, seeking $17 million in compensation. In August, Variety magazine reported that Holmes had filed a lawsuit against the Chris Martin-led band, seeking more than $12 million in unpaid commissions related to the band’s yet-to-be-released tenth and eleventh studio albums.

After 20 years serving as the band’s manager, Dave Holmes quietly ended his professional relationship with Coldplay last year and filed a lawsuit in London’s High Court. In legal correspondence prior to the lawsuit, Coldplay threatened to present a substantial defense along with a counteroffer.

Now, they’ve followed through on that threat, claiming that Holmes allowed the “Music of the Spheres” tour to get out of control. The band cites spending $10 million on custom-made stage poles that proved unusable and an excessively large screen. Coldplay is seeking $17 million in damages.
Additionally, the lawsuit claims that Holmes borrowed $20 million from tour promotion company Live Nation, money that was used to finance a real estate development in Canada. A representative for Holmes told The Sunday Times: “Coldplay knows it faces challenges in its defense. Accusing Dave Holmes of non-existent ethical failures and other invented misconduct will not divert attention from the real issue – Coldplay had a contract with Dave, refuses to fulfill it and must pay Dave what is owed to him.”
