The BBC announced last Sunday afternoon (8), that actor Ncuti Gatwa, 29, will be the new protagonist of “Doctor Who”. “The future is here! Ncuti Gatwa is the Doctor”, wrote the official profile of the network on Twitter. In July 2021, the departure of actress Jodie Whittaker, 39, who has played the main character since 2017, was revealed.

Gatwa is Scottish born in Rwanda, Africa, and will be the first black actor to play the role of the 14th Doctor. “This role and show means so much to so many around the world, including myself, and each one of my incredibly talented predecessors has handled that unique responsibility and privilege with the utmost care,” said Gatwa in a statement. “I will endeavor my upmost to do the same”. The actor didn’t contain his excitement when talking about working with Russell T Davies, 59, showrunner and director, “His writing is dynamic, exciting and incredibly smart and effervescent. A metaphorical playground for the actor. The entire team has been so welcoming and they really give their hearts to the show (…) Unlike the Doctor, I have only one heart, but I’m giving it all to this show,” he revealed.
The science fiction production debuted in 1963 and now has specials released exclusively in cinema. Jodie Whittaker, was the first woman to play the Doctor and starred in the series over three seasons. As well as the stars Matt Smith, 39, Peter Capaldi, 64, and David Tennant, 51, the previous protagonists. The release of the new season of “The Doctor” is scheduled for later this year as part of the BBC’s 100th anniversary.
